COMPASSION.
SERVICE.
COMMUNITY.
Meet Liz
Born and raised in Magna, Liz Oates understands firsthand the issues that our community is facing, and she’s running for House District 27 because she’s tired of watching the west side be ignored at the Capitol.
Growing up, her father owned a small business, and money was often tight. It took her parents years to pay off her tonsillectomy, and food from the bishop’s storehouse sometimes lined their shelves. As so many of our neighbors struggle to keep up with rising costs, she knows what it’s like to live within your means but still sometimes need a little help.
Liz doesn’t have the typical experience of a politician: she’s never held office before, she’s not a lawyer or a developer, and she’s not independently wealthy. But our legislature has plenty of that. What we really need is someone who understands the whole range of people’s lives and who will prioritize service, not politics.
Liz has spent her career showing up for people in their hardest moments. She's worked as a nurse's aide. She's worked in a juvenile detention center with young women who were struggling in a system that was failing them. She's been a health insurance case manager, ensuring fairness for every person she served. And she spent the pandemic as a funeral director, walking families through their most devastating losses, standing in for the goodbyes that COVID wouldn't let families have in person. She knows what it means to show up for people at the very worst moments of their lives.
Right now, so many in our community feel ignored by the people who are supposed to be representing and fighting for us. Liz will be the kind of representative that listens and gives our neighbors a real voice at the Capitol, focused on the things that matter: making sure our state is affordable, livable, and welcoming for all of our families.
LIZ’S VISION FOR THE WEST SIDE
MORE AFFORDABLE
-
Families in Magna, Kearns, West Jordan, West Valley, and Copperton are majority working-class communities, faced with out-of-reach housing costs and renter displacements. Liz has stretched a budget and knows the costs of raising a family while working full-time. We need reasonable solutions to lessen the strain of housing costs on working families and individuals.
-
With over 20 years of experience in health insurance, Liz has seen firsthand the financial burdens our community faces when it comes to affording healthcare, struggling to address basic needs. Our first responders and frontline workers also can’t meet the demands that are placed on them. Liz will champion policies to expand healthcare access, lower costs for Utahns, and ensure that families don’t have to go into debt to get the care they need.
MORE LIVABLE
-
As a board member of the Oquirrh Foundation, Liz is already at work advocating for increased outdoor recreation access in Magna and beyond. Liz believes we can’t stand idle as pollution continues to affect our neighborhoods. We need policies to clean up our air that don’t leave the west side behind and recognize the impacts that we face every day. Our neighbors are suffering from toxic dust and water contamination with no regulations, especially as the Great Salt Lake continues to disappear and special interests push harmful projects like the proposed Stratos Data Center.
Liz will champion common-sense policies to get water to the Lake, improve west side air quality, and protect access to the open spaces that make our community. so special.
-
Liz will expand and improve access to crucial mental health and disability services. She will prioritize addressing Utah’s suicide rates, especially among teens and veterans, and ensuring that mental health services are available in schools and throughout our local communities.
We also must address those waitlisted on Utah’s Division of Services for People with Disabilities. This crisis continues to be ignored, but as someone who has personally navigated this system for her family, Liz is prepared to address the gaps and expand services to those in need.
Liz will also work to expand quality, low-income housing for people with disabilities.
MORE WELCOMING
-
Liz believes every Utahn deserves to be seen, heard, and recognized by their government. As your representative, Liz will hear you, meet with you, and advocate for you on Capitol Hill, no matter your political affiliation, background, or identity.
-
The continued culture wars and political attacks on marginalized communities and underrepresented individuals do not make our state better, safer, or more affordable. Liz believes all residents should be uplifted and supported fairly and equally, not attacked to advance partisan political agendas.
